All Star Weekend 12 - Night One
March 4th, 2016
PWG World Champion: Roderick Strong (since Black Cole Sun - December 2014)
PWG World Tag Team Champions: The Young Bucks (since Mystery Vortex III - June 2015)
Commentators: Excalibur, Chuck Taylor, Rick Knox & Chris Hero
1) Chuck Taylor vs. Trevor Lee
The shit talking on Trevor Lee by Chuck Taylor has finally come to a head. This match was randomly put together, but the past verbal exchanges were referenced as the two ended up fighting through the crowd onto the stage. Lee gets on a headset and yells at Excalibur about Chuckie T being an idiot before the Kentucky Gentleman grabs him from behind and slams him on the table, thus spilling water everywhere. Super fun stuff with Lee being the dickhead heel and getting tons of heat. It honestly surprised because from the start the boos rained down on him and only got stronger as things went along. Easy going, sprinty opener with Taylor taking a page out of Lee's book and winning with a roll up. Chuckie T's win streak continues.
Match rating - **3/4
2) Chris Hero vs. Evil Uno
UNO IS BACK BBY. So great to see him back in PWG for the first time in 3 years. He returned last month against fellow Canadian Mike Bailey in a losing effort and now he faces Chris Hero in a match which was a last minute addition to the card due to Tommy End being unable to compete. It turns out to be quite the slugfest and REALLY turns it up in the final minute or two with an array of fighting spirit spots and kick outs at one. Literally everyone in the building was on their feet during the last 60 seconds of this match. In the end, the master of the elbow uses one of his own to put away Uno. Awesome ending to an otherwise average, solid contest.

3) Drew Galloway vs. Trent?
"This is a rematch from Smackdown in 2009." - Chuck Taylor
Chuck brings up a hilarious fact on commentary, but this match was much better than anything those two did while under the WWE banner. That isn't really saying much however it does show that this was quite the contest and the best on the show up to this point. Galloway powered Trent around for awhile and threw him across the ring despite Trent not being a small guy. It was pretty hilarious seeing him ragdolled like that. This was really just a solid effort, nothing more, nothing less. Just a good mid-card match up.
Match rating - ***1/4
4) Roderick Strong vs. Mark Andrews
Roddy threw Mandrews around like he was nothing. Andrews fired back with his signature high flying offense. Roddy brutalized him again. Andrews came flying back. That was the story of this match and it was fun to watch. Roddy ultimately dominates and picks up the win to get a little more momentum heading into his highly anticipated title match with Zack Sabre Jr tomorrow night.

5) Kyle O'Reilly vs. Marty Scurll
MATCH OF THE FUCKING NIGHT. Kyle O'Reilly is really something else. This is his first official match back and he tears the house completely down with Marty Scurll. The hybrid style was exemplified to a tee here with these two grappling and throwing strikes from start to finish. There were a number of killer exchanges with slaps, kicks, and elbows flying all over the place. O'Reilly also targeted the ankle of Scurll and went back to it on multiple occasions. This began early in the match and kept re-occurring and ended up doing so in the finish as O'Reilly trapped Scurll in the center of the ring with an ankle lock which forced him to tap after an absolutely awesome match. Watch this match!

6) Adam Cole vs. Zack Sabre Jr
Rematch from BOLA 2014, but this time it's under totally different circumstances. Cole targets the legs of Sabre in an effort to maim him and immobalize him heading into his title match with Cole's stablemate Roderick Strong tomorrow night. They do a good job of working that story here with Cole being a major dick and Sabre fighting back from underneath like the fiery babyface he is. Roddy gets involved near the end however it's end up being a mistake as Sabre locks Cole in the stronghold, thrusts back on it, and makes Cole tap right in front of his stablemate. Phenomenal visual as Sabre stares down Roddy the whole time whilst using his own submission maneuver.
Match rating - ***3/4
7) The Young Bucks (c) vs. Ricochet & Matt Sydal - PWG World Tag Team Title Match
This was your standard tag team main event that you'd expect from The Bucks and two guys like Ricochet & Sydal. It doesn't feature anything you haven't seen before, but it's still a really good match with all the action and flying you could ask for. Sydal gets worked over and they build to the Ricochet hot tag. He has an awesome sequence where he takes The Bucks out all on his own before they go into the finishing run of crazy stuff. The Bucks spray something in the eyes of Ricochet which leads to them getting a cheap victory with a roll up.
Match rating - ****
After the match, The Bucks act like they're going to shake the hands of Sydal & Ricochet only to tell them to suck it. They beat them down with help from Roderick Strong and Adam Cole who run down. Zack Sabre Jr runs in only to become the recipient of a four on one beating to close the show. Roddy cuts a promo and says tomorrow night he will out wrestle Zack, injure Zack, and make everyone cry when he is still the PWG World Champion.
First off, incredible work! I loved this show, and counting the next night I loved the whole weekend. Scurll and O'Reilly have a beautiful chemistry that makes me want even more of them against one another.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, I've begun a perilous journey through the back catalog of PWG shows and I'm at a strange crossroads. With 65 pages of match reviews, I have decided to not only post those reviews sporadically but also, I have plans to start a podcast dedicated to that watch list. If you'd like to get in on it and add your own views to these shows I'd be more than happy.
That sounds awesome! Let's talk more about it, email me: lewis2913@gmail.com
